Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Spotlight – Abilene, Texas
The Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour rolls into Abilene, Texas to McMurry University, home of the War Hawks at Walt Driggers Field on Sunday, October 11th.
After a 47-year absence, McMurry University brought the baseball program back in 1997 and since then, Walt Driggers Field has played host to two NCAA West Region Tournaments, and selected as the site for the 2011 West Region Baseball Tournament.
In this baseball-rich portion of the United States, many former Baseball Factory players have come through the area on their way to the next level.
Stone Garrett – Garrett is a 2014 graduate from George Ranch High School in Sugar Land, Texas and was selected in the eighth round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins.
He attended his first Baseball Factory event during the College PREP tryout in Houston back in November of 2011. Between that event and the 2013 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament (where he also was selected to the event in 2012), Garrett lowered his 60-yard time from 6.74 to 6.65 and showed the raw power potential that he is now showing in the Miami Marlins minor league system. In August 2013, he was an Under Armour All-American selection, where he collected two hits in four trips to the plate with a run scored.
This season, Garrett is playing for short-season Batavia Muckdogs of the New York-Penn League where he has blossomed into a player to watch in the Marlins organization. In 58 games for the Muckdogs, Garrett is hitting .297 with 18 doubles, six triples, 11 home runs, 46 RBI, 36 runs scored and was a NYP North All-Star selection.
Joshua Thompson – Thompson is a 2014 graduate of Burnet High School in Burnet, Texas and will be a sophomore next season in Abilene, Texas playing for Abilene Christian University.
Thompson’s Baseball Factory experience began in March 2010 with an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Round Rock, Texas and subsequently, participating in four more National Tryout or College PREP events in Round Rock (Nov. ’10, May ’11, March and Nov. ’12) and the 2011 Freshman/Sophomore Fall Classic in Arizona, developing his plus abilities as a catcher. Thompson improved his pop time to 1.97 at the Nov. 2012 event to 1.94 at the 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament. He also showed marked improvements with the bat, showing steady rhythm, consistent contact and an advanced approach hitting to the opposite field.
Ryan Moseley – Moseley was a three-year letter winner at Lubbock Cooper High School in Lubbock, Texas and was selected in the 36th round (1,088 overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2013 MLB Draft.
The 2013 grad went 10-2 with a 1.78 ERA with 111 strikeouts in 78.2 innings as a senior, and was a Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association First Team All-State selection in addition to Texas Sports Writers’ Association Second Team All-State, All-City and District Pitcher of the Year.
Moseley’s Baseball Factory experience started with a National Tryout in San Antonio in May 2010. He followed that up with a College PREP event in Round Rock (Nov. 2010), Pirate City Christmas Camp & Tournament (Dec. 2010) and a two-time selection at the All-America Pre-Season Tournament in 2011 and ’12.
As a freshman at Texas Tech in 2014, Moseley pitched 13 1/3 innings in the 2014 NCAA Tournament without allowing an earned run, including 7.1 innings against No. 4 Ole Miss at the College World Series. He finished the season as an Academic All-Big 12 Rookie selection, making 22 appearances (5 starts), going 1-2 with a 2.84 ERA with three saves in 5o 2/3 innings pitched, holding opponents to a .201 batting average.
