Major League Baseball’s Winter Meetings Busy With Activity

The unofficial start to the 2015 baseball season started this past week with the Winter Meetings in sunny San Diego, California and the hot stove is roaring with many teams making moves to better their rosters in 2015 and beyond.

The Chicago Cubs landed perhaps the biggest starting pitching free agent this off-season, signing former Boston Red Sox star Jon Lester to a six-year, $155 million dollar contract – the largest in franchise history – to become the ace of the Cubs staff for new manager, Joe Maddon.

Antonio Torres Continues Upward Trend at Baseball Factory National Tryout in Sacramento, CA

We first saw Antonio Torres, a left-handed hitting catcher from Creek View Ranch Middle School in Northern California, in October 2010 at the Under Armour National Tryout in Santa Rosa, CA. He posted a 2.38 pop time and a raw velocity of 66 mph that day, both respectable numbers for an 8th-grader. In January of 2011 he attended the Arizona National Spring Training, where he worked on all aspects of his game – and set the wheels in motion for his development.

Pop Times Fall, Fastballs Rise During Baseball Factory Tryout in Pensacola, FL

Before serving as a College Recruiting Consultant for Baseball Factory, “Coach” Jim Spooner won 688 games at the University of West Florida, where he was the head baseball coach from 1983 until 2006. In August of 2008, the UWF baseball stadium was renamed Jim Spooner Field. A month later, in September of 2008, Coach Spooner passed away after a long battle with leukemia.

Hinson’s fastball attracts colleges

Clarke County youth, PJ Hinson, is not only pitching his way into high school stardom with his 86 mph fastball, but he’s pitching himself to colleges all across the country.

While most Clarke Countians are dealing with cold blustery winds, Hinson traveled to Vero Beach, Fla., where he participated in the Baseball Factory 2000 Camp.
