Florida Commit Brady Smith Posts 1.95 Pop Time In Tallahassee, FL

Brady Smith

University of Florida commit Brady Smith (Niceville, FL) put on one of the most impressive all-around performances at last weekend’s events. He placed his name on the 2017 leaderboard for exit velocity (90 mph) and raw arm strength (87 mph) while improving substantially in every area since we first saw him in 2013.

The most surprising thing he did at the Tryout, though, was to post a 1.95 catcher pop time to second base. The primary infielder is just starting to mix in behind the plate and vaulted onto the leaderboard in that category as well by using a combination of athleticism and arm strength. Brady is an intriguing, versatile prospect who will continue to garner a lot of attention.

A few young catchers showed well in California with 2018s Justin Truong (San Jose, CA), Nathan Jessell (Napa, CA) and William Kahn (San Francisco, CA) making the leaderboard as well as 2019 grad, Joe Sassi (Piedmont, CA).

Truong’s 2.01 was the fastest time of the day with Jessell throwing a 2.11 and Kahn recording a 2.14. This is the fourth time we have seen Kahn at Factory tryouts events, the last coming this previous fall (September 2015) at a National Tryout in San Francisco, CA. Sassi qualified on the 2019 list by throwing a 2.25 down to second base in his first ever tryout.
