EVENT DATE: 9/11/05
LOCATION: Husky Baseball Field, University of Washington
Top Prospects
The Top Prospects were selected by Andy Ferguson (Director of Scouting) and Matt Richter (Scout) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day – we now consider underclassmen in our selection process.
IMPORTANT – We list players at the position(s) where we feel they are prospects. This may result in a player being listed at a position they did not play for us, or having a position they did play for us go unlisted. As usual, all references to “average” are based on high school standards.
1. Brett Gardner, OF/1B, 2006 – Bellevue, WA (The Overlake School), 6-2, 195, R/R. Has a big frame with strength showing in his legs. Offensive potential stood out as his biggest strength. Stroke was short and quick. Hands worked well and his lower half action was solid. The ball jumped off his bat. Drove balls through the gap, showed mostly pull contact. Certainly hits enough for any corner spot. Home to 1B time indicated better speed than 60 yard dash, would consider him at least a slightly above average runner. If he stays in the OF, LF looks to be a good spot for him – three quarter arm angle, flew open some with front side. Slow tempo with balance on the mound, solid mechanically with slightly above average stuff. Has more value as a position player than on the mound. Projects as LF or 1B.
2. Griffin Sweazey, C, 2006 – Lake Forest Park, WA (Shorecrest HS), 5-10, 190, R/R. He is a solid catching prospect with the ability to swing the bat. He showed a strong average arm with carry / accuracy into 2B. He was able to work in a straight line with his footwork while gaining his ground to make the throw. He could speed up his footwork but has the mechanics and arm strength to continue to improve pop times. A quiet receiver who makes a strong target. He is not as polished of a blocker but still showed better than average ability. Average range and will continue to improve with added quickness. It was his hitting and power ability that stuck out the most during the workout. He showed a good bat plane through the hitting zone and use of lower half which resulted in gap-to-gap line drive power. There is some extra effort in the swing; an adjustment will only improve his overall ability at the plate. He shows future projection as a catcher but his bat should definitely find a spot in the line-up.
