FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Pittsburgh, PA B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & Rookie Session
EVENT DATE: 8/28/2005
LOCATION: John Arnold Sr. Memorial Field, Laroche College
This event marked the end of our summer “tour”. Between Memorial Day (May 30) and Labor Day (September 5) we had 15 Regional events, 11 Player Development Events, and (along with our partner Team One Baseball) hosted the first annual Baseball Express Cape Cod High School Classic (visit the Factory Scouting Report Archive for more information on this game).
Our summer "tour" covered 16 states – Florida led the way with five visits, while Massachsetts came in second place with four visits, and certain lucky ones of us made it as far West as Hawaii…
Now we are gearing up for a busy Fall season, which will hopefully be full of days on the field where the temperature is not 95 degrees…like it seemed to be everywhere we went this summer…For more information on our Fall events, visit our 2005 Schedule & Event Info page.
Top Prospects
The Top Prospects were selected by Dan Mooney (Assistant Director of Scouting) and Jim Gemler (Director of On Field Sessions) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day – we now consider underclassmen in our selection process.
IMPORTANT – We list players at the position(s) where we feel they are prospects. This may result in a player being listed at a position they did not play for us, or having a position they did play for us go unlisted. As usual, all references to “average” are based on high school standards.
1. Matt McEwen, 3B – Edinboro, PA, 5-10, 185, L/R. McEwen graduated from State College Area HS is 2005, and is currently enrolled at Mercyhurst North East College. He came to us to get a jump on his move to a four year school after his two years of Junior College. He has a strong looking body and a solid build. Aside from footspeed, he showed an above average set of tools. His left handed stroke was highlighted by rhythm and good hands. Lower body action and balance were very good, allowing him to generate bat speed and create hard contact. Good actions showed at 3B. His feet worked well through the ball, and he showed good hands. His throws had carry across the infield, tracked on line well. An athletic player in terms of body control. Was 77-79 mph on the mound with a good arm stroke.
2. Alan Lawrence, RHP, 2006 – Meadville, PA (Cathedral Prep), 6-5, 220, R/R. A physical RHP with a big frame, has good length and is not yet filled out. Fastball was 80—83 mph with good arm side run and down plane. He pitched from an over top slot, and spun a near well above average breaking ball. It had tight spin and plus depth, near 12 to 6 shape – great downward action. Change-up was strong average, had some feel and threw it with good arm speed. Arm stroke was clean and loose, and his delivery was balanced. Ability to spin such a lively breaking ball, along with the potential in his body, allows us to project future velocity on his fastball. A good combination of present stuff, and potential future stuff.
