FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Murfreesboro, TN B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & Rookie Session

EVENT DATE: 7/6/2005

LOCATION: Reese Smith Field, Middle Tennessee State University

On a day that saw over an hour of steady rain, we completed both the morning and afternoon sessions with little trouble. A lot of credit goes to the facilities and staff at MTSU – the combination of a great indoor facility, a very helpful grounds crew, and the hard work of our staff allowed us to get all of the players through their workouts.

As you will see in Top 5 Prospects below, underclassmen were on display. The month of July features Rookie (2008 – 2010 graduates) sessions in the afternoons, so it should come as no surprise to read about talented young players for the rest of this month.

Top 5 Prospects

The Top 5 Prospects were picked by Jake Weber (Assistant Director of Instruction) and Roger Smith (Scout) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day – we now consider underclassmen in our selection process.

1. Eric Brady, 3B, 2007 – Louisville, KY (Trinity HS), 6-1, 200, R/R. Brady featured an athletic body with size and strength. He just turned 16 years old at the end of May, and already showed a well rounded set of tools. His bat is the most impressive now, hit very hard line drives with a swing that didn’t really feature his strength – has a lot more to get from his lower half, giving him great power potential. He ran in the 7.3 range, and hit 84 mph on the radar gun. At 3B, his approach and hands were good. His exchange was good and he spun the ball across the infield well. Look for a little more from his body, and a lot more from his bat in the future. Please note corrected high school, we apologize for the mistake.

2. Shane Bagley, SS/RHP, 2006 – Nunelly, TN (Hickman HS), 6-2, 185, S/R. Bagley is very young for his grade, turns 17 in November. His long and lean frame has room to fill out, when it does he will probably move to 3B. He touched 89 mph at the arm strength station, and then touched 85 mph on the mound – both after pitching 2 days prior, so there is probably some more in there. His curveball was a tight 11 to 5 with some depth, while his change-up looks to be developing. He has good potential with the bat, especially from the right side of the plate. His hands and feet were good at SS, but mostly his arm stood out defensively.

3. Garrett Fanchier, RHP/C, 2008 – Lebanon, TN (Lebanon HS), 6-0, 165, R/R. A young player with good all around ability. He ran 7.16 in the 60 yard dash, and showed good balance and body control throughout his game. Rhythm highlighted his ability to catch and throw, resulting in times between 2.06 and 2.12. He showed strong average bat speed and ability to get the good part of the bat on the ball, he stayed inside the ball pretty well and some pop was present. On the mound his fastball was between 77-80 mph, though his arm looks like it has more life yet to come. He showed good feel for his secondary pitches, along with a solid delivery.

4. Cole Gobbell, SS, 2008 – Nashville, TN (Father Ryan HS), 5-8, 158, R/R. A quick twitch athlete, speed highlighted his actions. Ran 7.03 in the 60 yard dash, and showed quick feet and an idea of footwork in the infield – moved well laterally. His hands were solid and his exchange was smooth, good mechanical approach. Though arm (76 mph) can improve there is no reason to move him to the other side of the bag just yet, athletic ability is present and he is young. At the plate he featured bat speed and great contact – he got the good part on the ball with a quick stroke. Just like in the infield, his mechanical approach was very good.

5. Kyle Lewis, SS, 2008 – Millington, TN (Millington Central HS), 6-2, 160, R/R. A tall and lean young man with power potential. Hands were quick through the zone and he hit the ball hard up the middle and to the pull side. His overall stroke was solid and balanced, has a great foundation of hitting ability to build on as he matures and gets stronger. Some athletic ability was on display in the infield, though his approach and hands are a little young right now. He touched 81 mph at the arm strength station, but still needs a little work to spin the ball better across the infield. Potential in bat and body are exciting, and defensive skills just need more time to develop. A 7.43 runner in the 60 yard dash.
