FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Indianapolis, IN B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & PUMA National Tournament Team Tryout

EVENT DATE: 8/3/2005

LOCATION: Butler University

It seems like everywhere we go this summer we catch the hottest stretch of the summer…by 9:00am when we were starting the B.A.T.S. session it must have already been 90 degrees.

As usual on days where we see less than 50 players, only the Top 3 Prospects were selected. And also as usual, there were deserving players left out – which does not mean those players are not prospects, the selections are always based on comparisons of the players on the same field.

Top 3 Prospects

The Top 3 Prospects were selected by Andy Ferguson (Director of Scouting) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day – we now consider underclassmen in our selection process.

IMPORTANT – We list players at the position(s) where we feel they are prospects. This may result in a player being listed at a position they did not play for us, or having a position they did play for us go unlisted. As usual, all references to “average” are based on high school standards.

1. Justin Cooper, RHP, 2006 – Waukesha, WI (Waukesha West HS), 6-2, 175, R/R. Cooper featured one of the better sinking fastballs I have seen from a high school pitcher. He pitched from a tick below a three quarter slot and topped at 84 mph, his fastball has to be considered at least well above average. He also showed an above average curveball and change-up, both with action down in the zone just like his fastball. He certainly looks like he would consistently get under bats for ground ball after ground ball. His delivery had good rhythm and body control, and featured a shoulder turn back and through a little like Kevin Brown (New York Yankees). He looks like he can get bigger and stronger, his waist is high and his shoulders are square and broad – with the addition of some velocity he has potential dominant stuff.

2. Mike Neuwirth, SS, 2006 – Loveland, OH (Moeller HS), 6-1, 185, R/R. Neuwirth has a great frame to project on, and really is a great projection guy all around. Natural ability stood out during his defensive workout – he moved with ease and quickness, allowing him to range well to his left and right in order to finish plays. His mechanical approach has room to improve, mostly does not allow his arm to shine as it could (hit 86 mph). At the plate he hit from a no stride / no load approach – a very difficult thing to do. Front knee wanted to move first, followed by his shoulders. Even still, speed showed in his move through the zone and his path was short and loose. Really needs better rhythm to hit, mostly to allow him to hit with smaller muscles. Ran 7.31 in the 60 yard dash.

3. Mike Lunn, 1B, 2006 – Gary, IN (Roosevelt HS), 6-2, 230, R/R. Comparable to Dmitri Young (Detroit Tigers), Lunn combined size with body control and overall athletic ability – also plays football (fullback and defensive lineman) and basketball (power forward). His hitting ability was near well above average, and he showed above average power – with a wood bat. Balance, rhythm and a compact stroke stood out along with bat speed and hard contact up the middle of the field. With an aluminum bat his power would show near well above average, he drove balls to the gaps with the wood with little trouble. Athletic ability showed more than know how at first base, he moved with good life and showed a quick release with feel for multiple angles and the ability to throw on the run. Can easily see his defensive ability progress to above average. A talented player overall, especially with the bat.
