FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Denver, CO B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & Rookie Session

EVENT DATE: 8/8/2005

LOCATION: Auraria Field, Metro State University

Metro State University is situated right on the edge of downtown Denver. You can see the lights of Coors Field (Rockies) over the center field fence, the Pepsi Center (Nuggets and Avalanche) is right across the street, and Invesco Field (Broncos) is across the parking lot from Six Flags.

And yes…the ball does travel better in the mile high air. We took staff BP (couldn’t resist…) and even I almost got one to the warning track…Our Director of On-Field Sessions, Jim Gemler, hit one to left center field that hasn’t landed yet…and quite a few players left the yard during the B.A.T.S. Session.

Top 3 Prospects

The Top 3 Prospects were selected by Andy Ferguson (Director of Scouting) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day – we now consider underclassmen in our selection process.

IMPORTANT – We list players at the position(s) where we feel they are prospects. This may result in a player being listed at a position they did not play for us, or having a position they did play for us go unlisted. As usual, all references to “average” are based on high school standards.

1. Tyson Fugett, OF/LHP, 2006 – Bartlesville, OK (Bartlesville HS), 6-0, 163, R/L. One of the more talented players I have seen this year, Fugett showed a very solid set of tools both as a position player and on the mound. He ran 7.09 in the 60 yard dash, and showed an outstanding outfield throwing arm. When he took the mound later in the day he topped at 86 mph, could see him touching 88 mph or better with a fresh arm. Along with a live fastball he also threw three quality offspeed pitches – CB, CH and SL. Arm was very quick and he pitched from a over top slot, delivery had some violence and effort – will need some work but has great potential. Bat speed was above average, and the ball left his bat with great life. Path was good to contact, and he got through the ball even better. More potential than polish right now, but cannot deny his talent.

2. Corey Wilson, OF, 2006 – Broomfield, CO (Legacy HS), 6-0, 180, R/R. Ran 6.91 and 6.93 in the 60 yard dash, and hit 83 mph on the radar gun. Arm showed from the outfield as well, ball left his hand well and got into target with life also. Quickness and life in his feet highlighted his defensive actions. Stroke was loose and quick at the plate, maintained his bat speed through contact very well – balance through contact was excellent, also allowing him to have good barrel accuracy. Tended to get a little long and uphill, did not cause trouble in getting barrel to ball but did not allow for much backspin or carry into the outfield. Can see power going up as he learns to load a little better and stay more level with his shoulders, for now a solid singles contact type hitter with footspeed.

3. Connor O’Halloran, SS, 2006 – Boulder, CO (Boulder HS), 5-11, 145, R/R. O’Halloran grew on me throughout the day. I first noticed his lean, athletic frame – does not have much muscle yet, but has good proportions. He featured a flat, line drive stroke and made consistent hard contact through his round of batting practice – barrel accuracy was above average. His hands were great to the ball, easy and quick – cannot deny his hand eye coordination. Could stand to quiet his feet, improve his balance, and load his hands to a better spot. His arm worked well, hit 83 mph on the radar gun and showed loose and quick action to throw from SS. Actions were solid to feed and turn the double play, and he was solid on routine balls as well. Mechanics and overall strength can improve in his overall game, ability is certainly there to work with. A 7.41 runner in the 60 yard dash.
