Conversations with College Coaches: Abilene Christian University

Dan Mooney, our Senior Director of College Recruiting, recently caught up with Head Coach Britt Bonneau from Abilene Christian University (ASU). ASU plays in the Lone Star Conference of the NCAA Division II. Check out what Coach Bonneau looks for in a recruit, how he uses video to recruit players and what recruits can expect for fall practices.

1. How long have you been coaching? How long at you current college or university?
19 years / 17 at Abilene Christian University

2. Who are some of your mentors or coaches that you look up to?
Jimmy Shankle, Larry Cochell, Jerry Wienstein, Pat Harrison, Larry Hays

3. What is the first thing about your school and program that you’d want a recruit to know about?
ACU is going to challenge you spiritually, physically, and mentally to find the best in you. Then send you out into the world to do the same to others.

4. What qualities do you look for in a prospect on the field? Off the field?
Athletic ability, Character and Integrity

5. How has video helped your recruiting?
Video helps us evaluate those athletes we can't go out and see.

6. Do you recruit from Junior Colleges?
We use the JUCO system a lot. We feel these athletes are more experienced and mature and we can stick them right into our system and never miss a beat.

7. Can you break down your fall practice schedule? What will you try to accomplish?
We have three stages in the fall. 1. First five weeks we hit the weight room and spend a lot of individual time with them. 2. Evaluation stage: scrimmages and Team Practice. 3. Get Big Stage: Weight Room and Conditioning. What this accomplishes is we are able to narrow our team down to 35 players and begin to set our goals for the Spring. Once our fall is over we should know just how mentally tough our guys are.

8. Do you have a strength and conditioning coach?
Yes we have a Strength coach

9. Anything planned for your facilities (upgrades, changes, etc.)?
Just finish upgrading our field surface. Next on our list is to get new chair back seats and a over hang for shade.

10. Is there anything you would like to add about your assistant coaches, recruits, parents, or program that we have not asked you about?
Looking forward to moving to DI over the next four years. Hopefully to the Southland Conference.
