Baseball Express Cape Cod High School Classic Serves as the Turning Point for First Round Draft Pick, Phillippe Aumont
When Phillippe Aumont came to the United States for the 2006 Baseball Express Cape Cod High School Classic, he was relatively unknown outside Canada. Hard to believe for someone that stands 6 foot 7 inches tall, weighs 225 pounds, and throws 96 MPH. But that was the case when our scouts found him last spring. After cross checking our initial reports on Phillippe through various individuals, we were astounded that this player had not burst onto the American scouting scene, but what better place to announce your presence than Cape Cod. Our scouts decided to invite Phillippe to participate in the Cape Classic in order to hopefully use this event as a launching point.
Phillippe’s statistics from the Baseball Express Cape Classic weren’t anything memorable (one inning pitched, one hit allowed, one strike out, no runs) but his potential was made crystal clear to the 80 professional scouts in attendance, including various scouting directors and general managers. After his performance in the Cape the scouting buzz began to grow. His name appeared on the list of Baseball America’s top 200 high school players from the 2007 graduating class. He continued to climb up those rankings throughout the fall and spring and his stock never subsided. Last week, he was selected by the Seattle Mariners as the #11 overall pick in the first round of the Major League Baseball amateur draft.
After his selection, he was interviewed on the ESPN2 broadcast by Jonathan Mayo, writer and analyst for MLB.com:
Mayo: Being from Canada, it’s not always so easy to get scouts to see you. You had to pitch indoors a lot. What were some of the turning points in terms of scouts really being on you and knowing that they had a possible first rounder in Quebec?
Phillippe: I went to Cape Cod and that was my big point, and I gained confidence, and that was a big part of my life.
With his commanding size and presence, explosive fastball, a strong feel for his slider and change-up and enthusiastic attitude, Phillippe is just getting started on what will hopefully be an outstanding professional career.
Our Baseball Factory scouts are excited to launch the careers of even more players at the 2007 Baseball Express Cape Cod High School Classic. For more information on the Cape Classic, please click here.
