On Sunday December 7, the Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout tour rolled through Northern Illinois with a stop at the McCook Athletic & Exposition Center (The MAX). At 125,000 square feet, the MAX incorporates 79,000 square feet of turf, making it an ideal venue for our winter visit to the Chicagoland area.
We first saw Antonio Torres, a left-handed hitting catcher from Creek View Ranch Middle School in Northern California, in October 2010 at the Under Armour National Tryout in Santa Rosa, CA. He posted a 2.38 pop time and a raw velocity of 66 mph that day, both respectable numbers for an 8th-grader. In January of 2011 he attended the Arizona National Spring Training, where he worked on all aspects of his game – and set the wheels in motion for his development.
Before serving as a College Recruiting Consultant for Baseball Factory, “Coach” Jim Spooner won 688 games at the University of West Florida, where he was the head baseball coach from 1983 until 2006. In August of 2008, the UWF baseball stadium was renamed Jim Spooner Field. A month later, in September of 2008, Coach Spooner passed away after a long battle with leukemia.
