Arundel (MD) wins Baseball Factory Invitational
Gambrills, MD – Catcher Biran McCormick’s two-run home run and two-run single sparked Arundel High’s 11-3 win over Gloucester Catholic (NJ) in the championship game of the Baseball Factory Invitational.
McCormick’s third inning home run broke up a 1-1 tie then he hit his two run double in Arundel’s five run seventh.
“I’m really pleased with the way we played to win the tournament,” said Arundel Coach Bernie Walter.
“We had to extend our pitching with the three games in two days and our kids did the job. We played well in all aspects, hit the ball, ran the bases well, played well defensively and got very good pitching.”
Junior pitchers Chris Wuthrich (1-0) and Jeremy Moreland combined on a five-hitter for the Wildcats, who improved to 8-1 with the three-game sweep.
One of Gloucester Catholic’s five hits was a triple by Nick D’Assandro.
McCormick was named the Most Valuable Player in the tourney.
Arundel defeated Steinert (NJ) 5-2 in the semifinals with OF Joe Zimmerman belting a two-run home run.
Dustin Mitchell (3-0) allowed only one hit–a first inning two-run homer to Grant Harm–in six innings. He struck out seven before Jeff Feigl took over to retire the side in order in the seventh. Feigl (4-0) had pitched a three-hit, 2-1 win over Shenendehowa (NY) in Arundel’s first game.
Gloucester Catholic rallied from a six-run deficit to slip past Old Mill (MD) 12-11 in its semifinal game.
Old Mill got a complete game, seven hitter from Alex Buchholz to score a 12-5 win against Steinert for third place.
Shawn Summers had his third double in two games and drove in three runs to lead Old Mill’s offense.
Team MVPs included Zimmerman (Arundel), Joe Sacerodote (Gloucester Catholic), Buchholz (Old Mill), Steven Bernstorf (St. Paul’s), Scott Rader (Shenendehowa) and Matt Fryczynski (Steinert).
