Alumni Impact: Standout Performances at Every Level

Division I

Georgia Tech’s Zane Evans (2009 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament) was named the ACC Player of the Week after hitting .467 (7-for-15) with 9 RBIs and 2 HRs, including his ACC-leading 8th homer. During his current 12-game hitting streak, Evans is hitting .510 with a 1.039 slugging percentage.

Another Baseball Factory Alum received ACC honors this week. UNC’s Benton Moss (2010 Under Armour All-America Game) has helped keep the Tar Heels on top of the DI-baseball rankings in his start against No. 29 Miami. Moss carried a no-hitter into the sixth and finished his outing with 9 strikeouts in seven innings. This season, he has struck out 39 batters and has held opponents to a .174 batting average.

Earning his first career America East Pitcher of the Week honors, Tommy Lawrence (2008 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) of Maine led his team to victory over the reigning champion Stony Brook Seawolves. Lawrence threw a complete game shutout striking out a total of seven batters.

Charles Galiano(2011Baseball Factory Premium Video Program, Arizona Senior Fall Classic) of Fordham took home the A10 Player of the Week honors after having a monster week at the plate. Galiano had a total of 10 hits including 4 triples in a span of 5 games. He also collected 5 RBIs with an on-base percentage of .619 and a slugging percentage of 1.118.

In the Big South Conference, Gardner-Webb’s Erik Heiligenstadt (2007 Dodgertown World Series, 2007 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) received Pitcher of the Week honors after pitching a shutout over Campbell this past week. He struck out four and allowed four hits with only one runner getting past second base.

UC Irvine’s Andrew Thurman (2008 Ryan Lemmon Sophomore Showcase, 2007 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) also earned Pitcher of the Week honors this week in the Big West Conference. The junior threw a career-high 11 Ks in his fifth career complete game as the Anteaters get by the UCI Huckers 2-1.

The MAAC Pitcher of the Week award went to Marist RHP Brett Houseal (2008 Baseball Factory Premium Video Program). Houseal tossed an impressive seven-inning shutout, striking out six Villanova batters with only four hits and two walks. Only one Villanova baserunner reached third base the entire game.

Sean Manaea(2009 Baseball Factory Premium Video Program) of Indiana State took home the Missouri Valley Pitcher of the Week honors this week his first complete game of his ISU career on Friday night. He helped lead his team over Minnesota on the road, striking out 9 batters. However, the biggest play of the game was when Manaea made an impressive diving tag at home after a wild pitch, which ended the game and saved an ISU victory.

Another Baseball Factory Pitcher of the Week came out of the Pac 12 last week. Trevor Williams (2009 Team One West, 2008 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America, 2008 USA Baseball 16U Championships, 2007 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) of Arizona State dealt his second straight complete game and third career shutout in a 4-0 win over Long Beach State on Saturday. Williams struck out 5 and only allowed 4 total baserunners during the entire game.

Last week, San Diego’s Kris Bryant (2008 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament) had an incredible stretch of six games. In those games, Bryant slugged 5 home runs with 12 Rs and 9 RBIs, giving him to a team-high 12 HRs, 33 Rs, and 24RBIs so far this season. He also ended the week with a 1.316 slugging percentage and a .643 on-base percentage. The Toreros went 4-2 in those six games.

Jeff McKenzie(2008 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) of San Joaquin Delta College also had an impressive week, being names WAC Pitcher of the Week. McKenzie threw his second-straight complete game shutout as his team won easily over Northern Colorado 12-0. He ended his outing striking out 11 batters. This season, McKenzie has an ERA of 1.46 with a team-high 29 Ks.

 

Division II

In Division II baseball, Factory Alum and Mount Olive starter Matt Dillon (2006 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) recorded a career-high 11 strikeouts in an eight-inning complete game victory over No. 18 Belmont Abbey. This outing helped him earn NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas Baseball Pitcher of the Week award. The victory started a series sweep over Belmont Abbey, which helped propel the Trojans to the number one rankings in the Division II top 30.

North Alabama’s outfielder Jake Ward (2010 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament, 2009 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) collected 8 hits last week in 17 at-bats and was named Gulf South Conference Baseball Player of the Week. During the span, Ward had 4 runs, 3 RBIs, and a .529 slugging percentage.

Dylan Tice(2008 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) of Indiana University of Pennsylvania is leading the team in hitting with a .656 batting average with 12 RBIs and a .686 OB%. He was named NCBWA Atlantic Regional and the PSAC West Hitter of the Week early this month.

Freshman righty Zach Glaze (2011 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament, 2010 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) of Alderson-Broaddus was selected as the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week. To open the season, Glaze helped lead his team to victory over Salem International 2-1. The freshman retired the first seven batters in order.

In the beginning of March, Incarnate Word’s John Zule (2007 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) was 11-for-14 at the plate, which helped lead the Cardinals to a 4-1 record over the week. His biggest game was against UH-Victoria at home where he went 6-for-7 with 4 RBIs, 3 doubles, 2 walks, and a stolen base. During this week, he raised his average from .280 to .462 and was given conference recognition.

Bridgeport’s Mike Nowak (2009 Team One North, Baseball Factory Premium Video Program) was selected as East Coast Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for his season-open victory over Merrimack, where he pitched 5-innings of relief. He allowed only 2 hits and one run, while striking out 2 and walking none.

 

Division III

In Division III baseball, Salisbury has recently been ranked No. 1, which is the first time that has ever happened in school history. This was made possible in part by the play of two Baseball Factory alumni: Quinn Griffith (2009 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) and Nick Gentry (Baseball Factory Lessons, 2008 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament, BWI World Series, Accelerated Hitting Mini Camp, 2007 Arizona Junior Fall Classic). Griffith is batting .462 with a total of 24 hits, 12 RBIs, and a .577 SLG%. Gentry is also having a dominate season, batting .377 with a total of 20 hits, 2 HRs, 24 RBIs, and a .547 SLG%.

Also recently, Factory Alum Mike Rubino (2007 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) who recently jut became Western New England’s all-time hits leader. This season Rubino is batting .371 with 13 hits, 8 RBIs, and a .511 OB%.

Washington College’s Sean Connole (2008 Dodgertown World Series, Baseball Factory Premium Video, Baseball Factory Lessons) and Nick Marinelli (2009 BWI World Series, 2008 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout, Baseball Factory Lessons) both took home conference awards for their play on the diamond. Connole hit .609 during the week with 14 hits and 9 RBIs. This is his second time winning the Centennial Conference Baseball Player of the Week award. Marinelli received his first ever Centennial Conference Baseball Player of the Week award after hitting .571 with 8 hits, 8 runs, and a .684 OB% during the week.

Mitch Keeler(2009 Baseball Factory Premium Video Program) of Randolph Macon hit for Kthe cycle over the week in a 13-11 win over Hampden-Sydney on Wednesday. In the game, he finished 5-for-5 with 6 RBIs, including a 3-run homer. The freshman has a bright future in front of him as he too received conference recognition for his performance.

Cortland junior reliever Cody Petre (2009 Christmas Camp and Tournament, Baseball Factory Premium Video Program) was named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week and was also named State University of New York Athletic Conference baseball Pitcher of the Week. During the week, Petre pitched a combined 6 hitless and scoreless innings in relief with a save and four Ks. On the season he has a 1.04 ERA and 2 saves, helping Cortland to a 10-4 record and a No. 3 ranking.

 

NAIA

In NAIA baseball, Tennessee Wesleyan’s Trey Griffin (2009 Under Amour All-America Game) has been given conference recognition as Player of the Week for two straight weeks. During that stretch, the junior outfielder batted .400 with one homerun and 8 RBIs. This season, Griffin is batting .308 with 2 HRs and 14 RBIs.

Braxton Hamil(2009 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) of Mobile was recognized in the Southern States Athletic Conference as Player of the Week after going 8-for-12 with 3 HRs and 7 RBIs. During the three game series that week, Mobile went 3-0 over Truett-McConnell.

Embry Riddle’s Kevin Maloney (2007 All American Nomination, 2006 Team One South, 2005 Baseball Factory Premium Video Program) was honored as Sun Conference Pitcher of the Week after tossing 7.2 innings against No. 21 South Carolina Beaufort in mid-February. Maloney struck out 7 batters in a scoreless outing.

 

Junior College

On the Junior College level, Reid Mathews (2009 Under Armour All-America, 2009 Team One South, 2008 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) of Walters State led his team to a 5-0 record in the first full week in March, in which he homered in 4 of the 5 games. He was recognized as one of the OC Sports Baseball Players of the Week. The freshman batted .588 with 10 Rs and 14 RBIs. This season Mathews leads No. 7 Walters State with a .380 average and 26 RBIs.

Kyle Dolan (2011 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout)was named the NJCAA DII Player of the Week. Dolan was 8-10 on the week with 6RBI to help #8 Pearl River CC to four victories. For the season the freshman is hitting .615.

 

High School

Jon Denney – .636 with 4 2Bs, 2 3Bs, 5 HRs and 18 RBIs in his first 12 games.

Dustin Driver – Driver’s first start of the year was a 5-inning no-hitter in which he struck out 11.

Hunter Harvey – Hunter has struck out 28 over 12 innings in his first two outings of the season showing a fastball that has reportedly touched 97mph.

Billy McKinney – Through 12 games Billy is hitting .484 with 10 runs and 9 runs driven in.

Austin Meadows – Austin went 3-3 in a win over Dacula HS with 2 doubles, a home run, 3 runs scored and 3 runs driven in.
