2019 Under Armour All-America Game Recap

The 2019 Under Armour All-America Game, Powered by Baseball Factory had a special feel, as the Factory celebrated its 25th anniversary today, on the exact date of the 12th annual game. With the score 4-1 in the eighth, the American squad cut the lead to one with a two-run single and threatened again in the ninth, but a line out to third and a throw to first, quelled the rally and the National squad won for the first time since 2016, 4-3.

On the field, the National squad got the party started with an RBI single at 105.6 MPH off the bat of Zac Veen scoring Pete Crow-Armstrong after he stole second base to give them a 1-0 lead off of two-time Under Armour All-American Jared Jones.

National squad starting pitcher Jared Kelley was very impressive in his two innings of work, striking out five. Kelley was dominant out of the gate, with three fastballs at 96 mph, commanding it easily in and out, as the Texas commit also showed feel for a change and breaking ball.

Jared Jones started for the American team and snapped off an 88 MPH change, followed by a 96 MPH FB to start the All-America Game.

In the top of the second, Coby Mayo singled in Kevin Sim as he scored on a pretty slide at home to give the National squad a 2-1 lead.

Jones gave way to Flower Mound HS RHP Cam Brown in the third. Brown had an efficient and clean (not for the hitter) inning, inducing two weak ground balls, a busted bat and a backwards K in his frame.

Carson Montgomery took over in the third and showed well, striking out the side

In the bottom of the third, Virginia commit Nate Savino took over for Kelley. Savino touched 94 and turned over 2-seamers w/ tailing life around 91.

Victor Mederos turned in a quality inning, showing feel and throwing strikes on four pitches, an array of FB, SL, CB and a CH. He capped his inning by striking out the side, getting Cayden Wallace looking to end the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, two-sport athlete Robby Ashford put on a show in centerfield, making a diving catch of Werner Blakely’s liner. Meanwhile, pitcher Nolan McLean was attack mode all inning, getting the National squad 1-2-3.

Alejandro Rosario pitched the top of the sixth and made quick work of Jace Bohrofen on three pitches, striking him out looking, then got Alek Boychuk looking on three consecutive pitches. Later, he worked around a walk and a hit batter to strikeout the side.

In the bottom of the sixth, one of the two underclassmen in this year’s game, Andy Painter, got on the Wrigley mound and had command of his FB and CB. After a Blaze Jordan single, Robert Hassell singled with one out, moving Jordan to third. Painter then struck out Cayden Wallace and got out of the jam by getting Nolan McLean on a fielders choice groundout, 6-4 on the putout.

In the top of the seventh, our second underclassman, Christian Little pitched and hit Steven Ondina and then Ondina stole second. Later, Ondina stole third and scored on Susac’s wild throw, giving the National squad a 3-1 lead. Jace Bohrofen extended the lead with a beautiful swing, leading to a ground-rule double, scoring Mayo as they took a 4-1 lead.

The bottom of the seventh featured two fantastic defensive plays – pitcher Theo Millas made a nice barehanded grab on a comebacker during his appearance and the next batter Robert Moore lined a shot up the middle that two-sport athlete Blake Shapen gobbled up with a spin and strong throw to get the speedy infielder for the final out of the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth, the American squad cut the National squad lead to one with a two-run single to left by McLean, scoring Susac (after a walk) and Jordan (who reached on an error, to make it a score of 4-3.

Chicago-native Ben Hernandez kept things right where they were in the ninth inning with a scoreless frame in which he also struck out all three hitters he faced.

In the bottom of the ninth, the American squad threatened, putting two on with one out, but a line drive by Blaze Jordan was snagged by Kyle Karros as he doubled off the runner at first and the National squad held on for their first victory in the game since 2016.
