Conversations with College Coaches: George Washington University

Baseball Factory is privileged to work with programs from every level of college baseball. We strive to educate and guide our players when it comes to choosing the right school. The more information a player knows about a school, coach and program, the better. Recently, Dan Mooney went one-on-one with Dave Lorber, assistant coach/recruiting coordinator at George Washington University. From his mentors, to the type of players he recruits to his approach during fall ball, Coach Lorber gave some insight into the outstanding program he’s helped developed in Washington, DC. Check out our list of College Alumni and see what alumni played last year at George Washington and other Division I programs.

1. How long have you been coaching?  How long at George Washington University?
I have currently coached for 7 years and 5 at the college level. This is currently my first season at George Washington University .

2. Who are some of your mentors or coaches that you look up to?
My mentors include each and everyone of my former coaches that I have played for and coached underneath. I will always thank John Wells for giving me my start in coaching, but want to thank John Johnson, Matt Midkiff, Chris Langan, and Matt Senk for giving me opportunities to grow as a coach and helped to get me where I am today.

3. What is the first thing about your school and program that you’d want a recruit to know about?
George Washington University is committed to giving our student athletes the best possible experience you can have. We strive to be at the pinnacle of athletics and academics on a daily basis.

4. What qualities do you look for in a prospect on the field? Off the field?
Great Attitude and Effort is what we look for. It is a standard we hold our recruits and our players to each and every day.

5. How has video helped your recruiting?
Video gives us a chance to break down a player even deeper. We are also able to begin to evaluate talent outside of our immediate area because of video.

6. Do you recruit from Junior Colleges?
We do recruit the Junior College player. We must identify them as a high quality student as well as an impact player for us!

7. Can you break down your fall practice schedule? What will you try to accomplish?
The fall for us is all about player development. We like to use this time to build and implement player plans for each one of our players.  It will also be used as an evaluation stage for all of our new players. We like to teach and develop our guys from the first day they are on campus!

8. Do you have a strength and conditioning coach?
Yes, Paul Berry is our full time strength and conditioning coach. He was a former baseball player in college so he knows the grind of a full year of college baseball. He builds character and puts our athletes in the best possible shape.

9. Anything planned for your facilities (upgrades, changes, etc.)?
We just opened our brand new facility in Barcroft Park. It is a beautiful new stadium that is all field turf so we never worry about weather. In the future we look to add a club house and indoor batting facility there as well.

10. Is there anything you would like to add about your assistant coaches, recruits, parents, or program that we have not asked you about?
Being in the middle of Washington, DC is an experience of its own, but to live it day in and day out is special. The endless opportunities to explore history in the most powerful city in the country while getting a tremendous degree is something special!
