Alumni Impact: No-Hitters, Big Bats and Strong Relief

Colby Holmes (2009 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament) combined with two other pitchers to no-hit Albany. Colby earned the victory for the 7th ranked University of South Carolina with six hitless innings. Jack Wynkoop (2009 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) is also off to a good start for the Gamecocks. With a 1-0 record in two appearances, he has yet to allow a run this season.

LHP Luke Erickson (2007 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament, 2007 Team One South, 2006 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) made an impressive debut for Cardinal Stritch University last week. Despite a no-decision, he was dominant over seven innings allowing just one run and striking out 16 against LI – Belleville.

The 9-0 Miami Hurricanes are being led by freshman David Thompson (2011 Under Armour All-America Game). He is hitting .323 with six doubles, a home run and a team-leading 14 runs batted in. Michael Broad (2006 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout, 2006 Baseball Factory Team at USA Baseball 16U Championship) is also a big contributor early on offense hitting .455 with three 2B and six RBI.

James Kaprielian (2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament) struck out the side in the bottom of the 9th against Baylor to preserve a 5-4 win for 12th ranked UCLA. It was the 2nd save of the season for the Bruins closer who has struck out seven in his three innings of relief work with opponents hitting .091 against him.

Maine shortstop Michael Fransoso (2007 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) was named the America East Conference Player of the Week. In Maine’s five games he hit .500 with five 2B and seven RBI while stealing three bases.

Arizona State is off to a 5-2 start, including a win over #3 Arkansas, thanks in large part to quality pitching. Staff ace Trevor Williams (2009 Team One West, 2008 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament, 2008 Baseball Factory Team at USA Baseball 16U Championship, 2008 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) is 1-0 with 12 Ks in 12 IP and a complete game shutout of Tennessee. Freshman Ryan Kellogg (2011 Under Armour All-America Game) is 2-0 allowing only one run and striking out 10 in nine innings pitched. Fellow freshmen Ryan Burr (2011 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) and Brett Lilek (2010 Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout) have also started strong. Lilek got the win over Arkansas with five strong innings and Burr got the save.

Vince Conde (2010 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament, 2009 Team One South, 2008 Team One Futures) has helped #2 Vanderbilt to a 9-1 record. The shortstop is hitting .355 with two doubles, two home runs and six runs batted in.

Southern Cal freshman Kyle Twomey (2011 Under Armour All-America Game) earned his first collegiate win in style with a complete game 4-2 victory over Cal St – Northridge. He allowed just five hits over nine innings while striking out five.
