TOP TOOLS Phoenix, AZ

EVENT DATE: 1/6/2008

LOCATION: Brazell Stadium, Grand Canyon University, Phoenix, AZ

For every SCR | Under Armour Tryout Event throughout the United States & Canada Baseball Factory Scouts will be selecting a Top Prospect, Top Underclassmen (When applicable), & additional players who showed at minimum one plus tool.

TOP PROSPECT
Jake Barrett  | RHP | 2009 | Desert Ridge (AZ) HS – (From the UA Preseason AA Tourney) Barrett is a big, strong RHP that was impressive to watch. He came out of the box and hit 91 mph on his first 4 pitches and sat in the upper 80’s his entire outing. His FB not only had velocity, but it had late run with downhill plane. His CB and CH are both solid, but he will need to develop them more for the next levels and become more consistent. He really doesn’t need them right now because his FB is so overpowering and effective. Jake also showed good athleticism and is nimble; especially for such a big bodied young man. He did not give up a hit in the 10 batters that he faced. Jake has ridiculous potential and has room to firm up and get stronger which will surely produce a successful baseball career.

TOP UNDERCLASSMEN

Mackenzie Handel | OF | 2010 | Chandler (AZ) HS – Mackenzie is a young player with tons of athleticism.  His swing is quick and direct to the ball with power especially to the pull side.  His swing is balanced and has rhythm.  Everything is fluid and compact.  In the field, Mackenzie could benefit from a long toss program but he takes great angles to the ball and follows the throw nicely.  Transfers the ball from the glove to the throwing hand quickly and is very accurate.  Mackenzie still has plenty of time to increase stock and might even consider a move to the infield.

TOP TOOLS

Below is a list of additional players that we would like to recognize for their performances at the session.

Please Note:  Many players are selected for our Under Armour National
Tournament and Training Camps that do not appear on the Top Tools list.  The
Tournament and Training Camp selections take into consideration the player’s
entire performance and how the scouts feel they will perform in a National
setting.  There are a number of instances where our strongest overall
baseball players do not appear on the Top Tool lists.  A player might have
3 or 4 good tools, but none that are outstanding so his name does not appear
in this section, however he might be selected for one of our National
Tournaments because of his overall skill level.

These Top Tools players were selected by Jim Gemler (Director of On-Field Sessions | Scouting Coordinator).
