FACTORY SCOUTING REPORT Philadelphia, PA B.A.T.S. Video Scouting Session & Rookie Session
EVENT DATE: 8/22/2005
LOCATION: Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth Meeting
Since our April 10 event in New Orleans, we have featured nearly 100 players in Factory Scouting Report. The group of players featured represents the Top College Prospects that attended our Regional events (B.A.T.S. Sessions, Rookie Sessions, PUMA National Tournament Team Tryouts).
Look for a complete listing of the first 100 players, along with some interesting facts about the group as a whole. We still have a couple more events to go before we reach 100, so make sure to check back in the next couple of weeks for the story.
Top 3 Prospects
The Top 3 Prospects were selected by Andy Ferguson (Director of Scouting) and Dan Mooney (Assistant Director of Scouting) based on their performance at the event. The ranking is based on their status as college prospects, and is relative to the entire group of players we saw on the day – we now consider underclassmen in our selection process.
IMPORTANT – We list players at the position(s) where we feel they are prospects. This may result in a player being listed at a position they did not play for us, or having a position they did play for us go unlisted. As usual, all references to “average” are based on high school standards.
1. Dusty Odenbach, RHP/3B/1B, 2006 – Rochester, NY (McQuaid Jesuit), 6-2, 208, R/R. Odenbach had some muscle on a big frame. A low effort player, the game looks to come easy to him. His fastball was an easy 84-86 mph with steady arm side life, and also mixed in an above average down breaking CB and a fading CH. Body control highlighted his delivery, after a little funky move to gather he stayed closed and worked powerfully down the mound. Arm stroke was loose and easy, and the ball jumped out of his hand – has potential for 90+ mph fastball. Hit with a no stride approach, and looked to be hitting into a soft front leg – but still drove several balls to deep right center, and made hard contact to all parts of the field. Bat speed was above average, and like everything else he did it was easy. A potential 2-way college player.
2. Stephen Brush, RHP, 2006 – Hillsborough, NJ (Hillsborough HS), 6-3, 185, R/R. Brush pitched from a low three quarter arm angle, and produced a fastball between 83 and 86 mph from both the windup and the stretch. His breaking ball had good downward action, and from his arm slot it worked across the zone as well – depth was strong average, not a hammer but a good quality pitch. He also threw a CH and SL, both were just a little better than average. His arm was loose out front, had some whip action despite a little bit of high elbow coming out of the glove. Delivery had good tempo, allowed him to keep good balance and body control through the release.
3. Carey Zimmerman, OF/SS, 2008 – Minisink Hills, PA (East Stroudsburg South HS), 5-6, 135, R/R. A gifted young athlete, Zimmerman showed a very good set of tools. Had a great running stride, and ran 7.04 in the 60 yard dash. Hit 83 mph on the radar gun, and showed a well above average arm from the OF – balls tracked on line and had great carry. Light feet and good body control highlighted his defensive ability both in the OF and at SS. Took a great round of batting practice with a wood bat, hit the ball hard all over the field and drove the ball to right center. Hands are very quick to the zone, and he was accurate with his barrel. A very talented young player.
