Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Spotlight – Parker, Colorado

The Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout Tour rolls into Parker, Colorado at Double Angel Ball Park on Sunday, October 4th.

Double Angel Ball Park, opened in 2006, has two fields: Logan Field and Dillon Field. The fields are named after Logan and Dillon Dixey of Parker who tragically passed away from carbon monoxide poisoning swimming off a houseboat while on vacation with their family in 2000.

In their honor, the Double Angel Foundation was created to raise awareness about the dangers of carbon monoxide in the marine environment and to provide scholarships to both youth baseball players and ball players continuing their education beyond high school, according to the Foundation’s website.

The town of Parker rallied around the Dixey family, and with the help of volunteers, businesses and organizations, helped to build Double Angel to honor Logan and Dillon and create an environment where future youth baseball players can enjoy the game they love.

Today, we highlight three impressive players from the state of Colorado who attended an Under Armour Baseball Factory National Tryout in Colorado and who are performing well collegiately.

Voss, in Lakewood, CO during a National Tryout.

Cory Voss

Cory Voss – Voss, a two-time Colorado All-Star, was a 2014 graduate from Pueblo South High School and hit .587 as a senior. He was selected by the hometown Colorado Rockies in the 34th round of the ’14 Draft but opted for college at the University of New Mexico.

Voss put together a tremendous freshman season in 2015 with the Lobos, hitting .345 with 14 doubles, five triples, five homers, 35 RBI, 34 runs scored and a .431 on-base percentage. Among all freshman catchers in the NCAA, he ranked second in batting and third in both slugging and on-base percentage. He was named a freshman All-America by both Collegiate Baseball Newspaper and the NCWBA as well as Mountain West Co-Freshman of the Year.

Voss participated in the Under Armour College PREP in Lakewood, CO back in May of 2012. Two months later, Voss participated in the Under Armour Southwest Regional Tournament where he showed continued improvements in his game. He ran his best 60-yard time during the tournament (6.81) and great pop times between 1.99-2.12 which received great marks in being able to control a running game with his arm. Besides physical abilities, scouts loved Voss’ mental capacity to handle the game.

Johnson at a National Tryout in 2012.

Spencer Johnson

Spencer Johnson – As a senior at Grandview High School in 2013, Johnson was named to the All-Centennial League First Team and the senior All-State game, helping to lead the Wolves to to back-to-back Centennial League Championships. He went 5-1 with a 1.52 ERA with 34 strikeouts in 46 innings pitched.

Johnson also participated at the Under Armour College PREP in Lakewood in May 2012, the same event Voss attended, and Johnson showed good command with his fastball ranging from 77-81 MPH. His secondary pitches were above average that day as well with a curveball that had 10/4 shape to it and a changeup that had good cut and could be thrown for a strike.

After graduation, Johnson’s next stop was at the University of Northern Colorado in Greely, Colorado where he appeared in four games, recording three strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

He has since transferred from Northern Colorado to Wayne State in Nebraska to play for the Wildcats.

Peterson at the 2013 Under Armour All-America Game

David Peterson

David Peterson  – Peterson was a four-year letterman and a senior captain at Regis Jesuit High School and a 2014 graduate of the school. Peterson finished his senior season 3-0 on the mound with a 1.15 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 24.1 innings pitched. Peterson was selected in the 28th round by the Boston Red Sox in the 2014 MLB Draft.

Peterson is the true definition of an athlete working his way through the Baseball Factory program with the events he participated in, zigzagging all across the country. Starting way back in May 2011 with a College PREP event in Lakewood, then the following month at the 16U Championships in Arizona, followed by a stop at the Arizona Junior Fall Classic in October.

In January 2012, Peterson was named an Under Armour Pre-Season All-American and in June, participated in the Under Armour Southeast Regional Tournament. Then, in November, to Texas for the Team One Futures Series. In May 2013, he participated in the Under Armour Memorial Day Classic, and finally in August, was named an Under Armour All-American.

Peterson plays at the University of Oregon, and the big 6’6”, 235 pound lefty was part of the Ducks’ starting rotation. Peterson made 14 starts, going 4-6 with a 4.39 ERA, striking out 81 batters in 82.0 innings pitched. Opponents batted only .257 off of him.
