Former Baseball Factory Player Brian Tews, a freshman, maintains an impressive 1.53 ERA after 11 appearances. He has allowed just 18 hits and three earned runs over 17+ innings of work. Norwich, CT- – The Brown baseball team swept a doubleheader with Marist at Dodd Stadium in Norwich, CT on Wednesday. The Bears recorded their first two shutouts of the season with 3-0 and 4-0 victories. Freshmen Brian Tews and Ethan Silverstein started on the mound for Brown with both allowing just three hits in seven complete innings.

The Bears got on the board in the bottom of the fourth with two runs on two hits in the first game. Junior Jeff Nichols drove in the first run with a double down the leftfield line.

Freshman Devin Thomas brought in Nichols on the next play with a single down the leftfield line, giving Brown a 2-0 advantage.

Brown added another run in the sixth to take a 3-0 lead. Junior Bobby Wiginton singled then stole second and scored with Nichols producing another RBI hit.

Tews recorded the shutout on the mound in his first collegiate win. He struck out four and walked none. Nichols led Brown as he went 2-2 with two RBI.

Silverstein was just as impressive in the night cap as he struck out seven and walked just one. Silverstein is now 2-1 on the season.

Brown got its offense going early in the game, scoring two runs in the opening frame. Sophomore Paul Christian and junior Chris Contrino recorded back-to-back singles to start things off.

Christian later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nichols. Contrino crossed the plate when Marist recorded an error, giving the Bears a 2-0 lead.

The Red Foxes threatened in the fourth with a lead-off double but freshman righthander Ethan Silverstein got out of the jam, keeping Marist off the board.

Silverstein kept the shutout in place in the fifth as he struck out the side despite Marist getting two on base with a Bears error and a base-hit.

The Bears added two insurance runs in the sixth after Nichols and Thomas tallied back-to-back singles. Sophomore Danny Hughes drove in the first run with a bunt down the third base line. Nichols was able to score from second thanks to heads up running.

Brown got one more run in the inning with an RBI ground-out by freshman pinch hitter Ethan Burton, giving the Bears the 4-0 victory.

Brown will return back to Ivy action this weekend as it travels to Harvard for a four-games series with the Crimson.
