Senior hurlers lead Mounties

WILLIAMSTOWN — The Mount Greylock baseball team expects the 1-2 pitching punch of Phil Mabey and Peter Lieberman to carry it a long way this spring.

Thursday afternoon, under sunny skies and a bone-chilling wind, that senior duo carried the Mounties to their first win, combining on 13 strikeouts and seven hits allowed over seven innings in a 7-4 victory over visiting Wahconah Regional.

“Getting the first win is always one of the toughest things you have to do,” said Greylock head coach Steve Messina, who has five new starters in his line-up. “This puts everyone at ease. It’s kind of like an icebreaker. You get your first hit, then you get your first win and it keeps going from there.”

Mabey, a 6-foot-5 right-hander, got the start Tuesday, gave up two hits in the top of the first inning and then retired 15 of the next 16 batters. Second baseman B.J. VanLuling gave him some great support, pulling off two unassisted double plays in the first two innings.

Mabey’s smooth sailing, though, ended with two outs in the sixth. Back-to-back walks followed by an RBI single by Matt Boudreau and two-RBI double by Brendon Barschdorf ruined his shutout bid and shrunk what was a 4-0 Greylock lead to 4-3.

“My arm was really lively at the beginning,” said Maybe, who struck out 10 batters in all and thought the stiff wind helped the movement on his curveball. “But my legs got real tired at the end. This was my first start, so it’s tough to go out there and pitch the whole game.”

There was no fear for the Mounties, though. Messina brought on Lieberman in relief, and with the game-tying run on base, he struck out Jared Chivers swinging with a nasty curve to escape the jam.

Greylock then padded its lead in its next at-bat. A Kyle Jolin single was misplayed in leftfield, allowing VanLuling, who had walked, to score from first. Lieberman then stepped up and swatted a stand-up triple to deep right, scoring both Jolin and Andrew Agostini to push the Mounties’ lead to 7-3.

Lieberman allowed one run in the seventh, but with the game-tying run at the plate, he struck out Boudreau swinging to collect the save.

“That stuff doesn’t bother him,” Messina said. “Mentally, he’s very strong. Even last year, when he’d get into tough situations, he wouldn’t let it affect how he was pitching. He concentrates even better and almost strives on it.”

The Mounties jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Jolin’s RBI triple scored VanLuling, who led off with a single.

Wahconah starter Joe Albano kept Greylock off the scoreboard for the next three innings, dodging a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the fourth. But the right-hander really tired in the middle frames, and at one point, hit four-of-11 batters with pitches.

That ultimately caught up with him in the fifth. Devin Rock got beamed in the back and moved to third on a Jolin double. After an Agostini walk, Maybe delivered an RBI single to left. Tom Pease relieved Albano, and his first pitch ended up hitting the backstop, allowing Mabey to come home with the Mounties’ fourth run.

“You could tell he was starting to tire,” Mabey said of Albano. “Plus, it helps when you’re a pitcher because you know what the guy is going to throw. I was looking for his fastball, and the first one he threw to me I was able to get a piece of.”

Greylock ended up with six hits total, three coming from Jolin. Mabey struck out nine batters, while Lieberman punched out four and gave up three hits over 1 1-3 innings.

Brad Duncan and Jason Bean paced the Warriors with two hits apiece.

The Mounties play Monument Mountain in the opening round of the Drury Tournament Saturday at 11 a.m. They’ll be looking for their second straight title and third overall under Messina.
