Building For the Future Baseball Factory Helps Players Put the Pieces Together

Like the other 75 or so baseball players gathered at Sky Sox Stadium on Tuesday afternoon, Matt Zurbriggen was hoping to catch the attention of college coaches.

Unlike the other players at the baseball showcase, Zurbriggen flew in from Wisconsin.

“I kind of wanted to get away,” he said.

That, and Zurbriggen wants to play college baseball. So he was among the high school juniors and seniors who participated in a showcase by the Baseball Factory, a Maryland-based company whose sole purpose is to help players get noticed by college coaches and pro scouts.

Based on what the company says is a success rate of more than 90 percent, at least 68 of the players at Tuesday’s 6-hour event will play in college or in the pros.

Harry Grumet, player development coach of the Baseball Factory, said in a speech to the parents, “This is the start of your son’s baseball career today.”

Why this day?

“Up to this point, they were not recruitable players,” Grumet said after the speech. “Now it’s showtime.”

The company focuses on getting players baseball scholarships, because those odds are greater than signing a pro contract. But the latter possibility still exists.

Cincinnati Reds scout Vince Sacco works for the Baseball Factory, running the on-field workouts. He also keeps an eye out for potential pros, and said he noticed two at Sky Sox Stadium. He’ll call the Reds’ regional scout and ask him to follow up.

“I double-dip, certainly,” Sacco said. “That’s the plus of this job.”

The players came from throughout Colorado, plus from Texas and Nebraska. Zurbriggen flew in from Wisconsin late Monday, and was to leave this morning to return in time to play a doubleheader.

The players range from Division III level to potential pro. Braden Keith, a junior-to-be at Falcon, has already made a name for himself; he’ll leave today for Florida for an 11-day try-out for the USA Baseball National Junior Olympics.

The Baseball Factory charges $400 to work with a player for one year.

The player performs at a showcase, where the company films him throwing, fielding and hitting.

The company sends 50 copies of the tape to area colleges, and five to the player for him to send to the schools of his choice.

Pro scouts who work for the Baseball Factory evaluate the players, rating them on a 1-10 scale on their hitting, hitting for power, fielding, throwing and running. And players and parents can call a coach or scout with the company any time to get questions answered.

For upcoming freshmen and sophomores, the company charges $197 for a workout, one videotape and advice.

The company also offers one-on-one instruction for $125 an hour, small group instruction starting at $395 for a weekend, and runs two camps at Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Fla., for $2,000.

Drew Antonini, a senior at Woodland Park, said going through the program is a wise investment. He’s considering attending the camp at Dodgertown.

“As much as I can, as far as I can,” Antonini said. “It sounds very nice.” Antonini said he was intimidated at first by the showcase’s surroundings. Players were called upon to run, field, pitch or hit by having a number announced. Their throws were clocked by a radar gun. Cameras filmed their every move for professional scrutiny.

Others felt comfortable from the beginning.

“Just another day of playing baseball,” said Rampart first baseman Russell Holt.

Well, except there was a pro scout and video cameras and the potential to be noticed by college scouts.

Other than that, just another day.
