2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament: Top 10 2014 Grads

With over 390 players participating in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament, powered by Baseball Factory, our scouts were treated to players from across the country that had many tools from blistering foot speed, to rockets for arms on the mound and behind the plate. While we cannot honor everyone that attended we did want to highlight a few players that stood out.

The following are the Top 10 2014 Grads from the 2013 Under Armour All-America Pre-Season Tournament.

Alex Jackson | C | Escondido, CA | Rancho Bernardo

One of two underclassmen to be named Under Armour All-Americans last year, Alex is the total package. Offensively, he is a polished hitter with tremendous raw power and outstanding bat speed (as evidenced by the 102 mph reading off the bat in the Easton Hit Lab). Behind the plate, Alex is an advanced receiver who is athletic and has excellent on-line carry to his throws. This set of tools at the catching position is rare to find.

Ryan Castellani | RHP/OF | Phoenix, AZ | Brophy College Prep

Ryan is a tall, lean RHP with serious upside. His delivery is athletic and his arm works free and easy. His ¾ arm slot is very tough on right-handed hitters and allows him to elicit a very effective sinker/slider/change arsenal. He has the ability to move the ball in either direction and he pitches to both sides of the plate. Overall, Ryan has a chance to be a special arm. Committed to UCLA.

Stone Garrett | OF | Sugar Land, TX | George Ranch

Stone is a physical young outfielder with present strength and tremendous tools. He is a 6.65 runner and he knows how to use it in games – both offensively and defensively. His stroke at the plate is short and quick with easy power to all fields. When all of these physical attributes are combined with a high baseball IQ you get a tremendous prospect.

Alex Verdugo | OF/LHP | Tucson, AZ | Sahuaro

Alex is an extremely talented 2-way player with a legitimate chance to do either at the next level. On the mound, this LHP has a quick arm that runs his fastball into the low 90s with late life. He complements that with a sharp curveball and an effective change. As a position player, Alex profiles well in RF with his athleticism, arm strength and ability to swing the bat. His LH stroke is fluid and generates good bat speed that leads to loft power to the pull side. He is aggressive in everything he does on the field and is a high level prospect at both positions, though LHPs with his stuff are usually in higher demand.

John Henry Styles | LHP/OF | Houston, TX | Episcopal

Styles is a LHP who can flat-out pitch. He is in total control on the mound and has a very advanced feel for his stuff. His repertoire includes a mid to upper 80s fastball with some run and sink, a slider with late break, a curveball that has tight rotation with 11/5 shape and an effective change. He throws all of these pitches for strikes from a balanced delivery. Styles is the type of pitcher you want to have the ball in big games. Committed to Stanford.

Gerard Hernandez | OF/1B | Phoenix, AZ | Pinnacle

Gerard is a rare commodity – a left-handed hitter with legitimate present power. His swing is short, quick and powerful with very few holes. He centers a lot of pitches leading to loud contact to all parts of the park with his biggest power to the pull side. In the outfield Gerard is athletic and aggressive. He runs and throws well enough to play all three outfield spots right now, though he profiles best on the corners in the future. Wherever he ends up defensively, this is a middle-of-the-order type of bat.

Grant Fennell | SS/RHP | San Diego, CA | Scripps Ranch

Grant is an extremely talented young player across the board. Though he has several outstanding tools, his bat stands out. He has a simple, aggressive approach with strong hands that allow him to control the barrel like a player much older and more mature. He generates hard contact from a rhythmic approach that is calm and without a ton of effort. As a defender Grant is an instinctual player with sure hands who picks his hop well and has plenty of arm strength for the left side of the diamond. That arm was on display when he pitched a few innings as well, showing a fastball that touched 90 and a power curveball that serves as an out pitch. Overall, this is a talented 2-way player now who appears to have his highest ceiling as an infielder who can really swing the bat. Committed to University of San Diego.

Jordan Pearce | 3B/RHP | Oceanside, CA | El Camino

Jordan is a big, physical 3B/RHP who has an outstanding left-handed swing. Hitting just seems easy to him. He is confident in the box with a quiet approach and clean, level stroke. He has quick hands, barrel accuracy and drives balls to all fields. In the field Jordan moves his feet well with a good first step and a strong, accurate arm across the diamond. He even jumps on the mound, running his fastball into the upper 80s and proving effective out of the bullpen. Overall, this is a polished LH bat that can handle any type of pitching and has a bright future. Committed to University of San Diego.

Kevin Williams Jr. | OF | Miramar, FL | American

Williams is a dynamic athlete with tools and the ability to use them. He is a plus runner allowing him to patrol center field and cover lots of ground gap to gap. He also uses that speed as a hitter to put pressure on the defense. His swing is quick, generating bat speed with strong hands and wrists and a coordinated lower half. The ball jumps off his bat, and he possesses surprising power. His advanced approach includes good strike zone awareness as well as the ability to hit with two strikes. Williams has the rare look of a young prospect who is a legitimate centerfielder, can hit at the top of the order and will even flash some power.

Troy Stokes Jr. | OF | Baltimore, MD | Calvert Hall

Troy is a game-changer with his 6.68 speed in the 60, his defensive instincts and his ability to swing the bat. As a hitter, Troy uses the entire field and seems to take a quality, balanced swing every time. He has a level path, quick hands and a simple, quiet approach. On defense, Troy is an aggressive centerfielder who can go get it. He takes quality angles and is comfortable as a leader in the outfield. Another true centerfielder with advanced hitting skills, Troy is an exciting prospect to keep an eye on the next couple years. Committed to University of Maryland.
