2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament Top 10: 2011 Grads

With over 260 players participating in the 2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament, powered by Baseball Factory, our scouts were treated to players from across the country that had many tools including sub seven second speed, sub two second pop time and above 89mph velocities. While we cannot honor everyone that attended we did want to highlight a few players that stood out.

The following are the Top 10 2011 Grads from the 2011 Under Armour Pre-Season All-America Tournament.

1. John Gant | RHP | Wesley Chapel, FL | Wiregrass Ranch
At 6’4”/180, John has a lean, loose pitcher’s frame with long arms and legs. He uses his size in his repeatable delivery to get excellent downhill plane on his fastball that sits in the 88-92 mph. He commands this heavy fastball down in the zone – at times flashing some additional arm side run that makes this pitch very difficult for young hitters to handle. John mixes in a sinking change and a curveball with some tilt. A good athlete, John should continue to develop his secondary stuff to go with a dominating fastball. He should make a huge impact at Long Island University where he is committed.

2. Scott Hoffman | RHP | San Tan Valley, AZ | Desert Ridge

Scott is an imposing presence on the mound at 6’5”/210. He shows his athleticism in his rhythmic, in-line delivery. His fastball sits in the 88-92 mph range with some sink, inducing consistent ground balls. Scott throws his FB to both sides of the plate and complements it with a sinking change and a slow curveball with some tilt to it. His command is advanced for his age and he attacks hitters aggressively with his FB. Arizona State has secured a future weekend starter in Scott.

3. Renaldo Jenkins | 2B | Fayetteville, GA  | Whitewater
Renaldo is a fast-twitch athlete with an outstanding body and projectable tools. He ran the 60 in 6.64 in Arizona and uses that speed at every opportunity – playing all out and hustling to put pressure on the defense. He has quick hands at the plate and uses the whole field. He generates bat speed that should lead to future power as well. In the field, Renaldo shows sure hands and excellent range at 2B along with a great feel around the bag on double plays. Overall, Renaldo plays the game the right way and has an exciting set of tools that he will take to UAB with him next year.

4. Gabe Douglas | OF | Henderson, NV | Green Valley
Gabe is a LH hitting outfielder who can really swing the bat. His stroke is easy and fluid and generates surprising bat speed and juice for his build. He drives balls to all parts of the park. His overall approach at the plate is advanced and confident and usually results in hard contact. In the outfield, he uses his 6.97 speed to track balls well and has the ability to play all three outfield spots as well as 2B. Gabe is slated to take his LH bat to Cal State Northridge next year.

5. Leland Clemmons | OF | Chesapeake, VA | Portsmouth Christian
Leland is a true CF with a lean, athletic build and outstanding speed (6.61 in the 60). He runs balls down in the OF with ease and also shows a strong, accurate arm. At the plate, Leland has a line drive stroke, good balance and quick hands. He also shows some patience and profiles as a lead-off hitter at the next level. Leland has committed to attend UNC Charlotte next year.

6. Kyle Slinger | LHP | Danville, CA | San Ramon Valley

Kyle is a LHP with long levers and a solid frame (6’2”/170) that is well suited for the mound. He has an advanced feel for pitching, an athletic delivery and clean arm action. His fastball shows a range of 84-87 mph on a slight downhill plane and his breaking ball has late bite and will get outs at the next level. He attacks hitters with his fastball working both sides of the plate and throws strikes. Slinger is a quality arm from the left side whose future is promising with a big upside.

7. Becker Sankey | C | San Diego, CA | Rancho Bernardo
Becker put on an impressive display in Arizona showing an interesting offensive combination of plate discipline, barrel awareness and power. He had quality at bats throughout the event working counts and driving balls to all fields. Behind the plate, Becker shows soft hands and a feel for receiving. He has on-line carry to his throws and a clean transfer that leads to times in the 1.97-2.05 range. Overall, this strong-bodied catcher will make a nice addition to a college program both at the plate and behind it.

8. Jared Cheek | C | Buckhead, GA | Morgan County
Jared turned the heads of scouts in Arizona with his arm strength. He is a flexible, athletic catcher who is the type of receiver that pitchers like to throw to and he is very competent on balls in the dirt, but that was overshadowed by the impressive, on-line throws to 2B. Registering as low as 1.78 on throws to 2B in the workout and throwing a 1.86 in a game Jared was quick to show off his best tool. In addition, he shows a contact bat from both sides of the plate and the ability to jump on the mound and top out in the upper 80s with very little effort. It is no surprise that Jared is receiving a lot of late interest from Division I schools.

9. Henri Faucheux | LHP | La Place, LA | Riverside Academy
Henri can flat out pitch. He is not the most imposing guy on the mound and he won’t light up the radar gun, but he’ll get outs and win. His FB sits comfortably in the 85-86 mph range and has late life in a seemingly different direction each pitch. One time it cuts, one time it sinks – it is just a tough FB for hitters to square up. Despite the movement on it, he commands this pitch very well. To complement his FB, Henri throws a true curveball with some depth and a sinking change that he has a feel for. All three offerings are thrown for strikes in any count. He should make an immediate impact at the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.

10. Jordan Kipper | RHP | Phoenix, AZ | Mountain Pointe

Jordan has an ideal pitcher’s frame at 6’4”/190 with long arms and big hands. He is a quality athlete who can swing the bat, though his highest ceiling seems to be on the mound. He pitches in the 85-88 mph range with a fastball that is consistently down in the zone. His breaking ball in the upper 70s and has good tilt to it, and he also throws a change with some run that he appears to have confidence in. Many schools are actively recruiting Jordan now, and we expect that more will enter the mix as they see Jordan throw this spring.
