Brice Cutspec - Home Run King

Justin Roswell ProfileJustin Roswell: Where Are They Now?

Only 19 games into the season, in his first at bat of the game, junior first baseman Brice Cutspec for Azusa Pacific University (APU) stepped to the plate leading the NAIA with 12 homeruns. With a 2 – 1 count, Brice sent his 13th homerun of the season 420 feet to straight away centerfield. Little did he realize that he had just tied the all-time homerun record with 44 for APU, a record that has stood untouched since 1981. In his third at bat of the game and a 2 – 2 count, Brice sent out his 14th homerun of the season and set a new APU record with 45 career homeruns.

This is an unbelievable feat for a player who is only in his junior season. Brice has come a long way since his days at the University of Arizona. In a previous entry to my blog, I briefly went into the story of a young man with hopes and dreams of playing at a top 25 division one program. Out of high school Brice was a 6’3/230 catcher/first baseman out of Westminster High School in Huntington Beach, California. In his senior year of high school, he accepted a baseball scholarship to attend the University of Arizona as a first baseman. During his first semester in Tucson, he realized that every player out there was an absolute specimen. It looked as though his dream of coming in and being an impact player, was years away from becoming a reality.

During Thanksgiving break of his freshman year at Arizona, Brice and I had lunch in Orange County and we were discussing his frustrations on the baseball diamond. I told him not to worry, that I would help him achieve his ultimate goal of playing professional baseball. After a couple of phone calls, I was able to get Brice and his family a meeting with Head Baseball Coach Paul Svagdis and Associate Head Coach Robert Ruiz at APU, to discuss the possibility of having Brice join the Cougars midyear. As fate may have it, a baseball scholarship opened up in December and Brice transferred from Arizona to APU. As they say, the rest is history, or in Brice’s case, he is still creating history.

That year, Brice helped lead the Cougars to the NAIA World Series in Lewiston, Idaho and finished with 19 homeruns. In his sophomore season with the Cougars, he helped get them back to Lewiston for back-to-back World Series appearances and finished the season with 13 homeruns. Now, Brice is a junior and looking to get drafted in the 2009 Major League Baseball Amateur Draft in June. This should be another exciting year for this young man.

In addition to Brice, there are several other former Baseball Factory and Team One Alumni on the Cougar roster.

Carlos Maddox - Participated in the Under Armour National Tryout
Sammy Soyring - Participated in the Arizona Fall Classic and Pre-Season All-America Tournament
Richie Brown - Participated in Team One Showcases, Pre-Season All-America Tournament and Exclusive College Recruiting Program
Christian Gagne - Participated in Team One Showcases, Pre-Season All-America Tournament and Exclusive College Recruiting Program
Stephen Gillette - Participated in Pre-Season All-America Tournament and Exclusive College Recruiting Program

We wish all of these outstanding student-athletes the best of luck.
